Sisters by Choice

Sisters by Choice

The women in my family are incredibly thoughtful gift-givers.

For birthdays, I can almost always count on something meaningful—a new journal, a lovely figurine, a cute refrigerator magnet, or a coffee mug with a sentimental (or occasionally inappropriate) message. They're the kinds of gifts that make you smile every time you see them.

One year for my birthday, one of my sisters handed me a gift bag.

Inside was... a refrigerator magnet.

Perfect!

I turned it over to read the message.

"We may not be sisters by birth, but we are sisters by choice."

...

Y'all.

This is my actual, 100% biological sister.

I looked at the magnet.

I read it.

I pressed my lips together.

I looked at her.

Then back at the magnet.

I was trying so hard not to laugh.

Finally I asked with a chuckle, "Do you know what this says?"

I read it aloud.

"We may not be sisters by birth..."

"So... am I adopted, or are you??"

We laughed so hard we nearly cried.

She had been so focused on finding the perfect gift to celebrate our sisterhood and friendship that one tiny detail slipped right past her.

And somehow... it still became the absolute perfect gift.

Not because of what it said, but because of the story it gave us.

To this day, I don't know if she was more embarrassed or if I was more entertained.

The best family memories are rarely the ones we plan.

They're the accidental ones.

The misunderstood gifts.

The things we laugh about until we can't breathe.

The stories that get retold at birthdays, holidays, and family dinners for decades.

Our families aren't built only on the big milestones.

They're built on inside jokes.

On embarrassing moments.

On ordinary Tuesday afternoons that somehow become unforgettable.

Years from now, I doubt anyone in our family will remember which birthday it was.

But somebody will eventually say, "Remember when she gave Teresa that 'Sisters by Choice' magnet?"

And every one of us will know exactly what they're talking about.

In closing, I am so incredibly grateful for my sisters, my sisters-in-law, my mom, my bonus mom, my mother-in-law, and the wonderful girlfriends who truly have become sisters by choice.

Thank you for loving me exactly as I am and for letting me be authentically—and sometimes wonderfully—weird. I hope you know how deeply I love each of you, too.

May we never stop creating the kind of memories that we'll still be laughing about decades from now. ❤️

P.S. We look so much alike that if one of us is adopted, the other one should probably start asking questions too.
