For a Reason, a Season, or a Lifetime

For a Reason, a Season, or a Lifetime

One of the things I've come to believe over the years is this:

God places people in our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime.

Understanding that has brought me an incredible amount of peace.

When I was younger, I thought every friendship was supposed to last forever.

If someone drifted away, I assumed I had done something wrong.

If life took us in different directions, I mourned what had been lost.

But as I've grown older, I've realized something beautiful.

Not every relationship is meant to last a lifetime.

And that's okay.

Some people are placed in our lives for a reason.

Maybe it's the stranger who notices you've dropped your wallet and runs to hand it back.

Maybe it's the cashier who offers a kind word on a day you desperately needed one.

Maybe it's the person who sits beside you on an airplane and unknowingly gives you exactly the encouragement your heart needed.

You may never see them again.

But for one brief moment...

God's paths for your lives crossed.

Then there are the people who stay for a season.

The coworker who helps you survive a difficult job.

The neighbor who becomes your best friend while your children are little.

The Bible study group that carries you through a particularly hard year.

The teacher who believes in your child at exactly the right time.

Sometimes we expect those relationships to last forever.

Sometimes they do.

Sometimes they don't.

And when they end, it doesn't mean they weren't real.

It simply means God had a purpose for that season.

Then...

There are the lifetime people.

The ones who know your story.

Who celebrate your victories.

Who sit beside you in hospital rooms.

Who cry with you when your heart breaks.

Who show up without being asked.

The people who become family, whether you're related by blood or not.

Those friendships are one of God's sweetest gifts.

The older I get, the more I realize something else.

We aren't just recipients of these relationships.

Sometimes...

We're the reason.

Sometimes...

We're the season.

Sometimes...

If we're incredibly blessed...

We become someone's lifetime friend.

That's a responsibility I don't want to take lightly.

It reminds me to be present.

To notice people.

To encourage them.

To love well while our paths overlap, whether it's for five minutes or fifty years.

Because we rarely know which role we're playing in someone else's story.

Maybe today you're meant to return the item someone dropped.

Maybe you're meant to be the friend who sits quietly beside someone who's grieving.

Maybe you're simply meant to smile at a stranger who feels invisible.

Whatever the reason...

Trust that God doesn't waste encounters.

I don't believe meeting people is an accident.

I believe our lives intersect exactly when they're meant to.

Some people are with us for a reason.

Some for a season.

Some for a lifetime.

Every one of them is a gift.
